Welcome to Year 1

In Year 1 the teacher is Mrs A Jones. Our teaching assistant is Mrs K Curry.

Transition from Reception to Year 1

Our aim is to ensure that the children experience a smooth transition from the Foundation Stage to Key Stage One. The Year 1 curriculum builds upon and extends the experiences that children have had in Reception. Learning through play will continue to be an important part of the school day and the children will gradually be eased into more formal learning as the year goes on so that they remain motivated, enthused and eager learners.

Literacy and Maths

In Letters and Sounds we will continue to have a daily session learning new sounds and practising and applying our phonics skills.

In Year 1 we are learning to become more independent and creative writers. Throughout the year we will look at a variety of fiction, non-fiction and poetry. We will take part in regular guided reading and writing sessions. There will be many opportunities during the week to read and enjoy books in class. Each week the children will be heard to read by the class teacher or teaching assistant.

In maths we will be consolidating our maths skills and using these in a variety of contexts. There will also be opportunities to explore problem solving and reasoning activities.

Afternoon Learning

During the afternoon we focus our learning on Science, Computing, RE, History, Geography, Music, PE and PSHCE. We deliver a topic led approach and link the theme to these subjects wherever possible.

If you have any further questions, please do not hesitate to contact us.
